VIERNE, L.: Violin Sonata, Op. 23 / Piano Quintet, Op. 42
(Concert-Centenaire, Vol. 2)

Fehlandt, Forck, Ingolfsson, Li, Stoupel
Accentus Music ACC-303712

Violinist Judith Ingolfsson and pianist Vladimir Stoupel are both accomplished soloists with international concert careers. In 2006, they began a successful collaboration, searching for new paths in chamber music and devoting themselves to the cultivation of an uncommon repertoire. One of their projects is “Concert-Centenaire,” dedicated to composers whose lives were influenced by the First World War.

The life of French composer Louis Vierne (1870-1937), a pupil of César Franck, was marked by terrible blows of fate and yet he reached the heights of the compositional profession in spite of the difficult times in which he lived. Almost blind from birth, Vierne became the organist of Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris and was celebrated during his lifetime as both a soloist and a composer.

Today, his works are for the most part – unjustly – ignored. This recording seeks to restore them to their rightful place. The richly nuanced Sonata in G minor for violin and piano was commissioned by the renowned virtuoso Eugène Ysaÿe, who played the triumphant first performance of the work in 1908. The Piano Quintet in C minor is dedicated to Vierne’s son, who was killed in the First World War. This piece is widely acknowledged as Vierne’s finest chamber music composition and is notable for its bold emotionality as well as its masterful construction.

Since its première in Prague in 1980, Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony has become one of the composer’s most performed works. Josef Suk, Dvořák’s son-in-law and student, is obviously influenced by Dvořák but displays his compositional skills in his own right in his Serenade for Strings.

Consistently praised for his interpretation of Slavic music, Mariss Jansons conducts the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in this live recording.

DE GIOSA, N.: Don Checco [Opera]
DE GIOSA, N.: Don Checco [Opera]
Castoro, Cauteruccio, Cavalluzzi, Colaianni, Lippo, Monaco,
Transylvania State Philharmonic Choir, Orchestra Internazionale d'Italia, Beltrami

Dynamic CDS7737

Don Checco is De Giosa's masterpiece and, given the 96 performances of the first production which took place at the Neapolitan Teatro Nuovo in 1850, it is also one of the greatest successes in the history of Naples' lyrical productions. This success continued until the late 190th century, becoming the most frequently performed opera, together with Verdi's La traviata.

Don Checco is representative of the best comic tradition Neapolitan musical theatre from the 19th century. This sketch of Neapolitan life (Don Checco speaks and sings in dialect), is a delightful comedy of errors accompanied by tuneful and bright music. The smooth and pleasant musical writing accompanies the lighthearted adventures of the protagonists. The libretto is essentially a small, enjoyable comedy with extensive prose dialogue in dialect or in Italian and "closed pieces" in music. This opera was a real surprise, pleasant and funny, and accurately produced.

Grand Piano

MOSOLOV, A.: Complete Piano Works
MOSOLOV, A.: Complete Piano Works
Olga Andryushchenko
Grand Piano GP703-04

Alexander Vasilyevich Mosolov was one of the most prominent Soviet experimentalist composers of the 1920s. Famed for his futurist orchestral piece The Iron Foundry, this ‘constructivist’ began to forge new directions through his use of motor rhythms, percussive attacks, and melodic angularity. Imprisoned for eight months in 1937, he later sank into undeserved obscurity. In the four surviving Piano Sonatas, Mosolov shows himself to be one of the boldest and most complex Russian composers of his time.

Djoric, Topalovic
Orlando Records OR0023

Featuring a collection of works based on dances and arias from across all eras of music. Included on this recording is a composition by Johanna Doderer dedicated to the performing duo. Cellist Ana Topalovic and accordionist Nikola Djoric create a unique and interesting sound for this album with their unusual instrumental pairing. Their opposing instruments lend a new tonal quality and emotional range to well-known pieces. The cello, whose sound most resembles the human voice, brings a new dimension to the interpretation of the arias. While Nikola Djoric brings hefty pieces such as Beethoven’s Seven Variations to life, his concert accordion is playing the piano’s role. The dances and songs are not just inspiration for Topalovic and Djoric, instead they are given a sound revival by both artists – refreshing and self-assured.

Berberian, Lester
SWRmusic SWR19010CD

This new release is an eclectic collection of 22 folk songs from all over the world. Cathy Berberian performs these works exceptionally well. The intensity and flexibility of her voice, her special vocal techniques and her mix of elegance and wildness were incredible. It wasn't by chance that Cathy Berberian felt a strong attachment to folk songs from around the world. The wide range of emotions and singing techniques she discovered in this never-ending treasure trove were a perfect match for her versatility.

She sings in 17 different languages and each song is given a completely new interpretation: she uses gentle yodeling effects in the Swiss song; the Croatian “Lepi Juro” becomes a resounding, languishing love song with her guttural delivery; in “I bought me a cat” she delivers masterful imitations of the animal sounds – as only a vocal virtuoso like Berberian can do.

MOZART, W.A.: Mass No. 16, "Coronation Mass"

Bussi, Canzian, Caputo, Polverelli, Laura, Lege Artis Chamber Choir,
I Solisti Veneti, Scimone

Dynamic DYN-37740 [DVD]

Galuppi's Mass for the Delivery of Slaves was written in 1765 for the choir of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, where the composer had recently been appointed music director. Written for soprano and alto solos, choir and orchestra, the Mass displays Galuppi's extraordinary (and previously largely unrecognised) contrapuntal mastery. Arguably, Galuppi's full talent as a composer is revealed more in his sacred works than those for the theatre. This is the world première recording of the work.

Mozart's Mass in C Major K. 317, composed in 1779, needs little by way of introduction. The masterpiece here receives a fine interpretation by the Solisti Veneti conducted by Claudio Scimone.
