Three exceptional pieces on a single CD: romantic, colourful and emotional Sonata by Strauss; Shostakovich’s gloomy, dark, monumental and – at times – ironic and grotesque Sonata, and finally the Ciaconna: a contemplative, rich in numerous shades of grey chamber version of Penderecki’s piece dedicated to the memory of John Paul the Second in its first phonographic rendition, more subtle than the symphonic original.

Etherea Vocal Ensemble
Derek Greten-Harrison

Delos DE3431

Following the conspicuous success of Ceremony of Carols, Etherea Vocal Ensemble’s stunning debut album, we at Delos lost no time in producing their second effort: Hymn to the Dawn. Containing several world premiere performances, the CD is an enchanting mix of mostly uncommon works for female choir by Gustav Holst, Amy Beach, Josef Rheinberger, Felix Mendelssohn and Giaochino Rossini; the program includes a cappella pieces and others with harp, organ, or piano accompaniment. While all of these lovely works are standouts among the limited female choir repertoire, Holst’s third group of Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda and the Two Eastern Pictures are particularly rare, exotic, and ripe for rediscovery.

LISZT Symphonic Poems
MDR Sinfonieorchester
Jun Märkl

MDR Klassik MDR1204

“As a composer and thinker, Franz Liszt exerted decisive influence on musical developments in the nineteenth century and opened many new doors.(…) Liszt committed his improvisations to paper, creating new forms that enabled him to give musical expression to his fertile imagination. In the process, he broke the constraining moulds of the symphony and sonata and developed Berlioz’s idea of the symphonic poem. He took inspiration from literature, from a heroic figure of classical antiquity in Prometheus, from Shakespeare in Hamlet and from Lamartine’s idea that life is a prelude ‘to that unknown song of which death intones the first solemn note’ in Les Préludes. In the works entitled Die Ideale after Schiller, Liszst passes comment on contemporary issues by lamenting the loss of humanistic values, but reaches a positive conclusion at the end.” – Jun Märkl

IN THIS MOONLIT NIGHT: Lieder by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky & Taneyev
Dmitri Hvorostovsky, baritone • Ivari Ilja, piano
Ondine ODE 1216-2

This second release of star baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky for Ondine features Russian Lieder by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky and Taneyev. Tchaikovsky composed his song collection Six Songs, Op. 73, in 1893, the year of his death, and they are full of musical nostalgia. Being in a frenzy of creativity after his opera Boris Godunov had been completed and premièred, Mussorgsky wrote his Songs and Dances of Death 1875–1877. Full of emotional excitement are Taneyev’s songs, especially Anxiously beats the heart from the Then Romances, Op. 17.

BRUCKNER Symphony No. 4
Staatskapelle Berlin • Daniel Barenboim
Accentus Music ACC-10217 [Blu-ray Video] / ACC-20217 [DVD]

Daniel Barenboim is an expert in exploiting the impact of cyclical performances of composers’ works: This time he focuses his sharp intellect on all six of Anton Bruckner’s mature symphonies. Der Tagesspiegel described Barenboim’s performance of the works with the Staatskapelle Berlin on six nearly consecutive evenings in June 2010 as a “superhuman” accomplishment and went on to praise how: “His Bruckner is conceived and performed very theatrically, like an opera without words.”

Bruckner’s famous “Romantic” Symphony No. 4 forms the prelude to a spectacular DVD series from Accentus Music and Unitel Classica, exploring Bruckner’s symphonic cosmos.

Ariane discovers an array of glittering jewels behind the first six doors, but a terrifying reality awaits her as she unlocks the seventh. José van Dam is cast as the villainous Barbe-bleue, while taking on the immensely demanding role of Ariane – who does not leave the stage throughout the entire opera – is American soprano Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet.
