Daniel Behle, tenor • Oliver Schnyder, piano
Capriccio C5110

On his fourth recording in two years, tenor Daniel Behle performs Strauss’ lieder: ‘I am a lyical Tenor and as such, one just gets introduced to the Schöne Müllerin, later to the Dichterliebe and eventually to the Winterreise (although I allow myself more time for that one) in the course of one’s studies. At the moment I am quite happy to have opened another page besides the lightly lyrical: to dip into the late romantic era and to discover the outgoing, active and hands-on aspects of the period.’

Nikolay Khozyainov piano recital
Nikolay Khozyainov, piano
CD Accord CDAccordACD171

Nikolay Khozyainov was one of the sensations of the 16th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. One of the youngest participants, from his very first appearance on the stage he managed to rivet the attention of the audience. His boyish looks contrast with the extreme earnestness of his playing, which brought to mind the great traditions of the Russian piano school. Under his fingers Chopin might often sound rather gloomy, like Scriabin or Rachmaninov, though not without an occasional touch of humour. It is evident in every way that the young musician takes his vocation very seriously.

New Love Must Rise
Selected Songs of Margaret Ruthven Lang, Vol 2

Donald George, tenor • Lucy Mauro, piano
Delos DE3410

Vol 2 of delightful art songs seeks to re-establish Lang’s long-forgotten reputation as the most significant American woman composer of her day. Historically important as the first American female composer to have her music performed by leading American orchestras, she never published (and later destroyed) those works, and stopped composing altogether in mid-life. But her published works – primarily her body of 130 art songs – reveal the rare skill and striking appeal of her art.

HOLST The Planets
BRITTEN Variations & Fugue on a Theme of Purcell, Op 34

BBC Symphony • Gennadi Rozhdestvensky
ICA Classics ICAC5053

Gennadi Rozhdestvensky never recorded Holst’s Planets. This Royal Festival Hall performance from 1980 is a freshly conceived interpretation which is both exciting and superbly played. The stereo recording has a spectacular dynamic range. The performance of Britten’s Variations & Fugue on a Theme of Purcell was given on a Far East tour in Osaka, Japan one year later. Osaka’s Royal Festival Hall has a wonderful natural acoustic which invests each instrument with great clarity and warmth.

Andrea GABRIELI Missa Dominicalis
Pierpaolo Turetta, organ
Newton Classics NC8802100

A vibrantly composed, performed and recorded example of a now largely forgotten genre, the organ mass, punctuated with only a few portions of sung text. The genre was rendered a museum piece by a late-19th-century papal interdict but it can still be heard occasionally in liturgical contexts, and of course on recordings. Andrea Gabrieli, uncle of the more famous Giovanni, was an early proponent of the organ mass, as both composer and performer, as organist from 1566 at St Mark’s in Venice, where this CD was recorded.

This CD makes a splendidly festive way to mark Newton Classics’ 100th release.

POULENC Dialogues des Carmélites
soloists • Arnold Schoenberg Chor
ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien • Bertrand de Billy

Oehms Classics OC931

Poulenc’s opera premiered at the Milan Scala on January 26, 1957 (in Italian). The work is currently experiencing a renaissance in the most important opera houses of the world. The theme that holds this opera together is that of fear: the story takes place during the French Revolution. The listener is constantly confronted by insistent sounds of death that pervade the entire piece.

SCRIABIN Piano Works
Olli Mustonen, piano
Ondine ODE1184-2

This CD features Olli Mustonen with piano works by Alexander Scriabin, which have become his signature pieces in recital concerts. The virtuoso sets of Etudes and Preludes cover a wide range of late-Romantic expressions, from heroic to religious, ecstatic to melancholic. The Sonata No. 10 is regarded as one of Scriabin's greatest works. The collection culminates with the pianistic tour-de-force of Vers la flamme, an astonishing piece famously championed by the late Vladimir Horowitz. Olli Mustonen has been hailed by The Sunday Times as, ‘a living dream of pianism, having broken through an expressive barrier that other players do not know exists.’

LISZT Piano Concertos
Daniel Barenboim, piano
Staatskapelle Berlin • Pierre Boulez

Accentus Music ACC-10239 [Blu-ray Video] / ACC-20239 [DVD]

Recorded live at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, 2010

For the very first time Daniel Barenboim tackled Franz Liszt’s two highly virtuosic piano concertos in a single concert. With Pierre Boulez, his friend and esteemed colleague of many years, conducting Barenboim’s own orchestra, the Staatskapelle Berlin, they were showered with praise on their tour across Europe. For both musicians, Liszt was one of the most important pioneers of modern music, as composer, conductor and pianist. He influenced revolutionary contemporaries such as Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner. Two examples of the latter’s magnificent orchestral work round off this concert programme celebrating Liszt’s bicentenary.

Arthaus Musik 108040 [Blu-ray Video] / 101598 [DVD]

Recorded live at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Firenze, 2011

Verdi’s Aida is one of the most popular operas of all time. It premiered at the Cairo Opera House on Christmas Eve, 1871, and was an immediate commercial success. The plot of Aida is filled with political intrigue, love, betrayal, passion, and vengeance, and has captivated audiences for generations. What piqued general curiosity about this new production of Aida was undoubtedly the operatic debut of Ferzan Ozpetek, a Turkish auteur who, after settling in Italy as a student, has become one of the most prominent directors of Italian cinema in the last decade, directing acclaimed films as La finestra di fronte (Facing Windows) and Mine Vaganti (Loose Cannons).

Gran Teatre del Liceu • Ivor Bolton
Christof Loy, stage director

C Major 709204 [Blu-ray Video] / 709108 [DVD]

Recorded live at the Gran Teatre de Liceu, 2011

Barcelona’s prestigious Gran Teatre del Liceu presents Mozart’s beloved singspiel in an elegant, dramaturgically twisted production with a sparkling cast of top-rank international stars headed by German coloratura soprano Diana Damrau as Konstanze and rising opera star Olga Peretyatko as Blonde. Damrau achieved a huge success and was hailed by critics as a thrilling Konstanze. Christoph Strehl, a tall and aristocratic tenor of important means and burnished technique, made Belmonte’s difficult music sound easy. Franz-Josef Selig was celebrated by critics as one the best Osmins that had ever performed in that role. Christoph Loy has conjured up a thought-provoking and strikingly original scenario in which both Konstanze and Blonde are feeling respect, admiration and even profound love for their captors. The result is a tantalising approach that overturns the traditional patterns of good and evil.

Phyllida Lloyd, stage director

Opus Arte OABD7095D [Blu-ray Video] / OA1063D [DVD]

Recorded live at The Royal Opera House, 13 June 2011

Black, red, cream and gold are the colours that define Phyllida Lloyd’s Royal Opera House staging of Verdi’s robust, yet penetrating setting of Shakespeare’s Scottish play. Manipulated by a whole coven of cunning, scarlet-turbanned witches, the characters often evoke figures in a splendid Gothic fresco. With Simon Keenlyside as an athletic, brooding Macbeth and Liudmyla Monastyrska as his Lady, both imperious and subtle, this performance, masterfully conducted by Antonio Pappano, goes far beyond mere sound and fury.

‘…an impressive company showcase, full of moments when chorus and orchestra are at full throttle. Whipped up by Antonio Pappano's baton, they sound truly thrilling.’ – The Guardian
