BERLIOZ, H.: Symphonie fantastique / VARÈSE, E.: Ionisation
Bavarian Radio Symphony, Jansons
BR-Klassik 900121

Three musical visionaries on one CD. Mariss Jansons interprets Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique" and "Ionisation" by Edgard Varèse. Following the Beethoven box, with its juxtaposition of classical and contemporary works, the current CD with Mariss Jansons and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks again features an encounter between music from different epochs. In the "Symphonie fantastique" Mariss Jansons, Chief Conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, investigates the dream worlds of the Romantic movement, and in "Ionisation" by Edgard Varèse transforms complex structures into an event of sensual immediacy. Both these works were important starting-points for the dawn of a new musical age.

TELEMANN, G.P.: Fantasies and Partitas
Schellenberger, Radauer, Süß
Campanella Musica C130182

In 1732-33 Telemann published the 12 Fantasies for “transverse flute without bass.” In this recording, the composer uses the Fantasie structure as a vehicle for highly variable musical forms and means of expression. Telemann described the 1716 Little Chamber Music as “consisting of 6 Partiten, arranged in a light singing manner for the violin, transverse flute, and keyboard.”  Hansjorg Schellenberger, Margit-Anna Süß and Josef Radauer perform.

Vocal Recital: Allen, Thomas Michael - BEETHOVEN, L. van / FAURÉ, G. / ZEMLINSKY, A. / BRITTEN, B. / BARBER, S. / EISLER, H. / WEILL, K. (Far Away)
Allen, Spencer
Capriccio C5194

“The general theme of this recording,” observes tenor Thomas Michael Allen, “is of things far away and a sense of being out of place, especially in terms of composers setting texts in languages not their own, or texts about places far from them; a longing for, or fascination with, foreign things or foreign styles.” Indeed, Far Away includes songs by four European composers who were living, or would live, in the United States; an American setting French poems written by an Austrian; a French composer imagining eighteenth-century Italy; and a German in Vienna writing of a man’s longing for his distant beloved. Mr. Allen, too, is “far away.” The American singer has lived and worked in Germany since 1995. The funny thing is that I don’t really feel like I completely fit in here either, but at least here my role is clear: I’m a foreigner.” Estrangement takes many forms.

Ars Nova Copenhagen, Hillier
Dacapo 6.220568

The Danish Golden Age in the first half of the 19th century is known as a period with an abundance of artistic expression, famous talents such as Hans Christian Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard and early Romantic composers like C.E.F. Weyse and Niels W. Gade. But according to the British choral director Paul Hillier, we can in fact speak of a continued ‘ Golden Age’ for Danish choral music today – which is why this collection of Hillier’s Danish Golden Age jewels with Ars Nova Copenhagen includes Classical and Romantic works as well as music from the subsequent generations right up until our own time.

ROSSINI, G.: Opera Arias (Virtuoso Rossini Arias)
Delos DE3455

This album of spectacular rarities by Gioacchino Rossini from superstar tenor Lawrence Brownlee – his first-ever aria collection with orchestra – is long overdue. It not only captures the most exciting bel canto tenor voice of our time in its absolute prime, but also offers a choice selection of rarely heard vocal blockbusters – drawn from several of the old master’s most rarely performed operas.

Brownlee’s voice is unique in the bel canto repertoire. While dripping juicy emotion, it boasts uncanny evenness of tone and timbre from top to bottom; no other tenor can deliver this repertoire’s highest notes with his special blend of rapid-fire vibrato and a thrilling, chesty ring. He nails the speediest and most florid runs with jaw-dropping flexibility, precision and dead-on pitch. It all adds up to a blazing, “shiver-me-timbers” vocal phenomenon that’s guaranteed to make any opera fan go weak in the knees.

BOWEN, Y.: 24 Preludes / Suite Mignonne / Berceuse, Op. 83
Grand Piano GP637

York Bowen was described by Saint-Saëns as ‘the most remarkable of the young British composers’. His 24 Preludes form a sequence of concise, richly expressive and directly communicative studies. The Berceuse Op. 83 ranks amongst Bowen’s most intimate scores, while the sophisticated Suite Mignonne demands the most delicate of touches from the pianist.

Israel Philharmonic, Mehta
Newton Classics NC8802143

The Symphony No.8, together with his unfinished Ninth, has been described as the final stage in this life-long process of finding his one true form of artistic expression. It is a symphony, which is said to present nothing fundamentally new, being somewhat a work in which achievements from his earlier endeavors finally comes to fruition. Nowadays this symphony is being regarded as one of the most important classical orchestral works from the late nineteenth century. Reissued in combination with the seldom recorded 0th symphony, this makes a very attractive Bruckner set. A vivid recording from the eighties, now finally reissued on Newton Classics.

NISINMAN, M.: Dark Blue Tango / VIERA, J.-M.: Tangos de medianoche / ORTIZ, P.: Marginal (Nuevo Tango Nuevo)
Musique des Lumières Orchestra, Agudin
Oehms Classics OC895

Oehms Classics proudly presents, with NUEVO TANGO NUEVO, the first series of world premieres of the leading Argentine composers in this field: Nisinman, Ortiz and Viera. These are by no means the usual tangos in the style of Carlos Gardel, for example, but genuine “concert tangos” intended for listening enjoyment rather than for dancing. In Facundo Agudin, born in Buenos Aires, this music has found a fantastic spokesman who interprets the melancholy of the tango argentino in an impressive manner.
