CHANSON D'AVRIL - French chansons and mélodies
Cabell, Terry
Delos DE3450

“It’s a voice that wraps itself around you…long, sinuous phrasing, warm tone and sophistication...” – The Times of London. Such praise is typical of critical reaction to American soprano Nicole Cabell’s ravishing singing. Ms. Cabell has taken the classical world by storm since winning the 2005 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World award. Drawn strongly to the French vocal repertoire, Nicole – in this, her first recording for Delos – explores the world of the chanson and its direct descendant, the mélodie.

The second part of this disc features Finnish soprano Soile Isokoski singing seven Rachmaninov songs (including the hauntingly beautiful Vocalise), accompanied on the piano by Mr. Ashkenazy.

FRANCAIX, J.: Divertissement for Bassoon and Strings / MOZART, W.A.: Bassoon Concerto, K. 191 (Through Time)
Lopes, English Chamber Orchestra
Solo Musica SM211

Invited to perform and record with the heralded English Chamber Orchestra, bassoonist Rui Lopes then took on the challenge of choosing the program’s repertoire. He chose to start with Vivaldi and Mozart, leaping into the Romantic era with Elgar and finally on to the modern era with Jean Françaix and Villa-Lobos. Rui Lopes only began bassoon study at age 18, but is nonetheless one of the more promising bassoonists of his generation. The Elgar and Françaix arrangements are world première recordings.

SGAMBATI, G.: Piano Concerto / Cola di Rienzo / Berceuse-Rêverie (arr. J. Massenet for orchestra)
Caramiello, Nürnberger Philharmoniker, Ventura
Tactus TC841908

Famed Lisztian pupil Giovanni Sgambati’s (1841-1914) Piano Concerto, op. 15, was the first work of its kind in Italy in the second half of the 19th century. His masterly inventive piano writing is placed at the service of a fully symphonic form, thus revealing his true vocation as a symphonist. The overture to Pietro Cossa’s Cola di Rienzo and the Jules Massenet transcription for small-orchestra instrumentation of Sgambati’s Berceuse-Rêverie receive here their world première recordings.

STRAUSS II. J. / STRAUSS, E. / STRAUSS, Josef: Orchestral Music
Vienna Symphony, Honeck
Vienna Symphony Orchestra WS005

After the early death of Strauss Sr., his oldest son Johann (1825–99), the “Waltz King”, assumed leadership of the father’s orchestra. The youngest son Eduard (1835–1916) later joined the ensemble. The middle son, Josef (1827–70) eventually learned to compose and became a musician as well. As a composer he was certainly on par with his older brother; his dances often display a certain wistfulness and Schubertian lilt. This CD unites compositions of all three sons of the Strauss dynasty’s founder.

ALDRIDGE, R.: Parables - An Interfaith Oratorio (Romey)
Okell, Yunus, Zabala, Zawisza, University of Minnesota Choruses, University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, University Singers, Romey
Naxos 2.110358 [DVD]

Robert Aldridge and Herschel Garfein are internationally renowned for their GRAMMY® award-winning opera Elmer Gantry (2007). Their follow-up collaboration, Parables (2010) is a cantata for soloists, a 200-voice choir and 80-piece orchestra. The attack on the World Trade Center in September 2001 haunts its writing but the use of passages from the Torah, New Testament and Koran seeks to bind the major faiths’ commonality, hopeful of healing and reconciliation. In this staged performance young dancers, costumes, and projection emphasize the music’s powerfully theatrical impact.

The production stars Samuel Youn, Ricarda Merbeth, and Franz-Josef Selig, and is conducted by Christian Thielemann. “…Mr. Youn…sings with dignity touched with anguish.” – The New York Times
