Opera Colorado Chorus • Colorado Symphony Orchestra

Marin Alsop, conductor

New York-born conductor Marin Alsop enjoyed an annus mirabilis with several acclaimed recordings released in 2009, including her sensational Bernstein Mass. And we can't get enough of Marin Alsop, who most recently released Dvořák symphonies on Naxos (8.572112) but whose American projects are especially close to her heart. A long-time champion of the eclectic minimalist music of John Adams, Alsop is the force behind a landmark new performance of the composer's most ambitious and popular opera, Nixon in China (1987). The Opera Colorado Symphony plays with potent energy and admirable clarity, especially in Adams' mesmerising wind passages. Baritone Robert Orth makes an impressive Nixon with surprising depth: just listen to the famous ‘News’ aria to hear his command of the role. Beyond the political intrigue, I find myself most fascinated by the cultural friction between East and West explored in the eloquent libretto. Undoubtedly last year's most exciting new opera recording.

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra • Marin Alsop, conductor

I will admit that I was certainly never a fan of Lenny’s most controversial piece. I remember not making heads or tails of it in college, determining that it was slightly more interesting than Andrew Lloyd Webber. The amazing Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony have – to use an obvious pun – made me a convert of this moving piece, a quest for spirituality in the modern world.

COPLAND /BERNSTEIN Clarinet Sonatas,
DANKWORTH Suite for Emma, Picture of Jeannie

Emma Johnson, clarinet • John Lenehan, piano

With music from Sir John Dankworth, Bernstein and Copland it is a delightful mix of classical and jazz styles. Emma Johnson is a former winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year and is one of Britain’s finest clarinetists. The Suite for Emma written by Dankworth for Emma Johnson is a highlight and demonstrates the sheer joy of the clarinet.

DOWLAND Complete Lute Music (4-CD Boxed Set)
Nigel North, lute

I love great music from all periods and from many different genres, so this was a VERY tough choice! Naxos has thousands of albums by composers from Pérotin to Penderecki (or from Anonymous to Zemlinsky, if you prefer) and Naxos has recordings of all of them! But one of my absolute favourites is John Dowland’s Complete Lute Music, which never fails to delight me. Nigel North’s subtle and intelligent interpretations are simply perfect, bringing vividly to life this Renaissance composer’s unique blend of mirth and melancholy. It’s like having Mr Dowland himself come to visit every time I play one of these intimate, intriguing and beautifully recorded CDs.

MacMILLAN Seven Last Words from the Cross, Christus vincit,
Nemo te condemnavit, …here in hiding…

Dmitri Ensemble • Graham Ross, conductor

The first time I heard this recording, I stopped everything I was doing, listened, and wept. I was immediately lost in the music. The music is at times challenging and uncomfortable, and at other moments incredibly beautiful. It is not always an easy listen, but it is worth it. You can feel the raw power of MacMillan’s writing pouring through every moment of the work.  It is the best setting of the Seven Last Words that I have heard. Whether you are spiritual or agnostic, this disc is worth an hour of your time.

Acht Jahreszeiten (Eight Seasons)
VIVALDI The Four Seasons, PIAZZOLLA Las 4 Estaciones Portenas
Tianwa Yang, violin • Ensemble Tianwa Yang • Gerd-Uwe Klein, conductor

Among the many excellent Naxos violinists, I particularly would like to recommend the young Chinese violinist Tianwa Yang. Considered as one of the most interesting artists in the world of music, highly acclaimed by critics, audience and fans Tianwa Yang fascinates with a breathtaking technique and a deep understanding for the nuances of European music, which she transforms into a sublime and beautiful playing. Listening to Tianwa Yang is simply a pleasure, either in a live performance or via one of her great CDs, such as her Sarasate recordings 8.572191, 8.557767, 8.570192 or her latest release “Eight Seasons” (8.551228, available in Germany only) with music by Vivaldi and Piazzolla. This young woman is phenomenally gifted and might become one of the greatest violinists of our times.

SHOSTAKOVICH The Girlfriends, Rule Britannia!, Salute to Spain
Soloists • Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra
Mark Fitz-Gerald, conductor

For any serious Shostakovich fan having a preliminary version of the 9th Symphony is a ‘must-have’. It gives an authentic answer to the questions and speculations regarding the original composing process of the composition. It gives new light, or affirmation, to the ideas regarding Shostakovich’s personality and way of thinking under the immense pressure from the authorities of his country. Plus, having a full CD of Shostakovich World Premiere Recordings is always an event worth celebrating!

Vaughan Williams Piano Concerto, The Wasps,
English Folk Song Suite, The Running Set

Ashley Wass, piano • Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
James Judd, conductor

This disc provides a fascinating opportunity to get to know RVW’s little-appreciated Piano Concerto. Ashley Wass is in total command of the challenging piano part and is ably supported by a beautifully coloured and balanced orchestral accompaniment, courtesy of James Judd and the RLPO. Plus, this main work is coupled with the popular Folk Song Suite and Wasps Overture, and the recording is crisp and clear – what more could you want!
