Leonard Slatkin celebrates his 70th birthday
August 31, 2014
We extend greetings to the distinguished American conductor and Naxos artist Leonard Slatkin, who celebrates his 70th birthday on 1 September.
Mr Slatkin has a significant Naxos discography to his credit, with many of the discs representing a major contribution to the label’s American Classics Series. He has recorded the Rachmaninov symphonies with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, of which he is currently music director, with future plans including more releases of Russian repertoire with the orchestra for Naxos.
Recent discs of French works were made with the Orchestre National de Lyon, of which Mr Slatkin is also currently music director. Their GRAMMY®-nominated recording of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique was acknowledged for its “…natural, sophisticated, glowing performance” (MusicWeb International), while BBC Music Magazine gave five stars to the first volume in their series devoted to Ravel’s orchestral works, observing that “Leonard Slatkin draws a vivid sound from the Lyon players…No one could do more for the early Scheherazade overture.”
We send Mr Slatkin our warmest thanks for the memories of past collaborations, wish him good health in the years ahead, and eagerly anticipate the release of his future recordings.
