In the studio: The Fine Arts Quartet records Mozart transcriptions

June 4, 2017

The members of the Fine Arts Quartet were joined by pianist Alon Goldstein and bassist Alexander Bickard for their recent recording of rare chamber versions of Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 23 and 24. Produced and engineered by multiple GRAMMY®-Award winner Steven Epstein, the disc is scheduled for release in 2018.

Founded in Chicago in 1946, the internationally renowned Fine Arts Quartet this year celebrates its 71st anniversary and continues to live up to its reputation as “One of the gold-plated names in chamber music.” (Washington Post)

Naxos is delighted to have been associated with the quartet since 2006, when the ensemble made its first recording for the label. The disc received the American Record Guide Critics Choice award for their performance of Robert Schumann’s 3 String Quartets, Op. 41: “One of the very finest chamber-music recordings of the year.”

A steady series of releases of eclectic chamber works since that debut recording has brought the group to this latest project, which will be their 15th release on the Naxos label. It features rarely heard chamber transcriptions for piano and string quintet of two of Mozart’s most magnificent piano concertos, K. 488 and K. 491. The arrangements of the orchestra parts were made by the 19th-century German composer and conductor Ignaz Lachner.
