Shostakovich 8th Symphony Wins International Classical Music Award – ICMA 2011

March 12, 2011

Naxos is proud to announce that its recording of the Shostakovich Symphony No. 8 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vasily Petrenko, won the Symphonic category of the inaugural International Classical Music Awards (ICMA), 2011.

“A totally convincing performance, intensely eloquent with overwhelming climaxes. The playing of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra—which has been transformed under Petrenko’s leadership—is superb.”

Says Remy Franck, President of the Jury: “Our international and independent Jury has selected the winners from a nomination list comprising over 500 CD and DVD productions and a wide range of artists and labels. Our winners are the expression of the highest artistry and demonstrate that this Jury is a stubborn holdout for nonaligned value judgments in a world of low-common-denominator commercialism!”

The International Classical Music Awards are the preeminent awards for classical music on an international level. The jury consists of professional music critics of some of the most important magazines, online services and radio stations: Crescendo (Belgium), Fono Forum (Germany), Gramofon (Hungary), IMZ (Austria), MDR-Figaro (Germany), Musica (Italy), Musik & Theater (Switzerland), Orpheus Radio (Russia), Pizzicato (Luxembourg), (France), Scherzo (Spain) and Viva Classica (Finland).

“Christopher Nupen—with the superb musical support of Vladimir Ashkenazy—rightly presents Tchaikovsky as an outsider in the Russian society. One simply must see this film to understand the sources of inspiration for the composer’s music.”

The ICMA award is the latest accolade for this recording, which has been hailed as a reference recording by some of the industry’s most important publications.

Allegro Film’s “Piotr I. Tchaikovsky: Two films”, distributed by Naxos, won the DVD Documentary category.

Congratulations to all concerned!
