JoAnn Falletta takes the LSO into studio to record music by Kenneth Fuchs for Naxos American Classics

October 25, 2011

by Michael Quinn

Kenneth Fuchs
Conductor JoAnn Falletta has taken the London Symphony Orchestra into the studio between August 18 and 19 to record five works by the American composer Kenneth Fuchs (pictured left) for Naxos American Classics.

Two of the five works feature instrumental soloists: Divinum Mysterium, a viola concerto for soloist Paul Silverthorne, which takes its title from an 11th-century Sanctus trope, and its creative impulse from the Protestant hymn tune Of the Father’s Love Begotten, “built upon a scalar motif of four notes, extended by sequences and inversions”; and American Rhapsody , a romance for violin (Michael Ludwig, concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra) and orchestra, which references the opening measures of the second movement of Fuchs’s String Quartet No. 2, Where Have You Been?

Also included are: the one-movement Concerto Grosso for String Quartet and String Orchestra, which draws upon music from the composer’s Fourth String Quartet; the nostalgic, orchestral “homage” to the great ocean-going liners of the 20th century, Atlantic Riband; and the three-part orchestral overture Discover the Wild, composed to accompany a documentary series on PBS.

The third recording of Fuchs’s music by JoAnn Falletta and the LSO for Naxos sees the continuation of the 25-year working relationship between the composer and conductor. Their first disc, released in 2005, received two Grammy® Award nominations, with the second released in 2008. The new recording took place in London’s historic Abbey Road Studios in August, with Grammy® Award-winning producer Tim Handley at the helm.
