This release continues Mark Fitz-Gerald’s critically acclaimed work in reconstructing Shostakovich’s film music with two scores from the 1930s. Fitz-Gerald’s restorations and orchestrations go far beyond the suites left by the composer, making any such release an instant new reference for Shostakovich scholars and fans alike.

Shostakovich was still a young composer when he was hired to provide incidental music for The Bedbug, a surreal and farcical satire on Communist utopian dreams and bourgeois corruption and vulgarity. He produced a terrifically knockabout score that draws on local fireman’s bands and American dance music. Illustrated by Shostakovich’s powerful middle-period music, Love and Hate is a film about female fortitude set in a mining village during the 1919 Civil War. The innovative score, newly reconstructed by Mark Fitz-Gerald from rough piano sketches and the 1935 soundtrack, combines symphonic sections with popular songs.

About the Artists
Described as ‘one of the indispensable Shostakovich interpreters of our time’, Mark Fitz-Gerald performed the Trauberg/Shostakovich classic New Babylon (1929) at the opening concert of the Tokyo Summer Festival in 2000 and the Rotterdam Gergiev Festival in 2001. With the help of Mrs Irina Shostakovich and Krzystof Meyer he restored the complete score to another Trauberg/Shostakovich film Odna (1929), and conducted the world premiere (the first Shostakovich premiere for over twenty years) in Holland and later in Paris.
The Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz’s repertoire ranges from symphonies to film soundtrack projects. They have received a number of ECHO Klassik Awards: Orchestra of the Year (2015) for their release of works by Bernd Alois Zimmermann; Concert Recording of the Year (Music of the 20th and 21st centuries) (2018) for a programme of music by George Antheil; Classical Music for Children (2013) for the album Na warte, sagte Schwarte; and Youth Promotion (2014) for their educational programme Leben mit Musik.
The Mannheim Opera Choir is resident at one of the oldest and largest municipal theatres in the world. Presenting approximately 20 works and over 130 performances each season, the chorus’ repertoire is among the largest and most diverse in Germany, spanning from the early Baroque to contemporary works, and has included a number of world premieres. In 2014, the magazine Opernwelt named the choir Opera Chorus of the Year.
Dani Juris has worked as both a singer and director with numerous vocal ensembles, including the Helsinki Philharmonic Chorus, the Helsinki Chamber Choir (previously the Finnish Radio Chamber Choir), the Kaamos Chamber Choir, the Torino Vocalensemble, the Slovenian Radio Chamber Choir and the chorus of the Opéra National de Lyon. He was appointed chorus master of the Mannheim Opera Choir in 2016.
